The humble garage is a space with incredible potential. This potential, though, is invariably wasted, as proven by the millions of garages across the country too full of junk to perform their primary function: storing vehicles.
If you have a garage overtaken by the mess of everyday life, you might be thinking about making a change. How should you go about transforming your garage?

Declutter
Before making any sudden movements towards your eventual garage transformation, you first need to give yourself the best possible starting point. This means addressing your garage as it is – and, unavoidably, everything within it. If your garage has become the dumping ground for junk, seasonal items and dead electrical appliances, then you’ll need to engage with its contents before you can meaningfully proceed.
A ruthless decluttering session will see you getting rid of a great deal of clutter, and also give you the opportunity to re-affirm your need for some key items. Some early investment in storage can also make your decluttering work far easier; for example, a toolbox will give you a safe space for your tools while you clean, ensuring they don’t get lost, thrown or damaged. The toolbox will also allow you to keep your finished garage clean and aligned with its new purpose.

Repainting and Restoring
The initial objective should be for you to completely empty your garage, giving you a blank slate from which to begin renovations. With an empty garage, you can properly inspect for what might need repairing or refinishing.
This is a good opportunity to repaint the walls in a colour of your choosing; if your garage is to remain a workshop or car storage area, this is also a good time to consider refinishing your floor with a hardwearing epoxy floor paint. If not, then you can at least fill in any chips or cracks before preparing for a more domestic flooring solution.
Storage
The key to preventing your garage space from becoming a dumping ground again is storage. We’ve already touched on how helpful tool storage can be early on, but further solutions can make it far easier to maintain a useful space more aligned with your ambitions for your home. Stackable boxes are useful for things like Christmas decorations or sports equipment, while overhead storage can be used for materials or bigger tools.
Conversion
Finally, we come to the end of the transformation – complete conversion. But into what? Your garage might become a home gym, as a safe and warm place for you spread out your exercise equipment (and a handy way to save on gym memberships). It could become a games room, with some comfortable furnishings and an arcade cabinet or two. It could remain a utility space, but this time a dedicated workshop with useful worktops and tools on hand. The sky is the limit.
